README Data tables for the week of 11/16 - 11/22 were replaced due to a data processing error. The correct data were released at 3:59pm EST on 11/25/2020 and are currently available. Please disregard any previous versions. See codebook.xls for instrument_id and answer_id values. The Small Business Pulse Survey (SBPS) produces the following data files for each survey collection period. national_sector_[COLPER].xls naics3_[COLPER].xls national_state_[COLPER].xls national_state_sector_[COLPER].xls empclass_[COLPER].xls top_50_msa_[COLPER].xls indexes_[COLPER].xls Survey collection period ([COLPER] in the filenames) includes the beginning and end dates of the period during which responses were collected. Note that businesses were asked about the experience of their business in the last week, in the last month, and since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic. The file national_sector_[COLPER].xls includes national estimates overall and by sector (2-digit NAICS). National overall estimates are designated by a '-' in the sector (NAICS2) column. The file naics3_[COLPER].xls includes national estimates overall and by sub-sector (3-digit NAICS). These subsector estimates for weeks 1-7 in phase 1 were revised to correct a processing error. The file national_state_[COLPER].xls includes national estimates overall and by state. National overall estimates are designated by a '-' in the state (ST) column. The file national_state_sector_[COLPER].xls includes national, state, and sector estimates as well as state by sector estimates. National overall estimates are designated by a '-' in the sector (NAICS2) and state (ST) columns. The file empclass_[COLPER].xls includes national, state, and sector estimates overall and by three employment size classes: A (1-4 employees), B (5-19 employees), and C (20 or more employees). The file top_50_msa_[COLPER].xls includes estimates for the largest 50 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA). The SBPS uses 2017 CBSA codes. For the information on geographic reference files see https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/demo/metro-micro/delineation- files.html The file indexes_[COLPER].xls includes four index estimates at the national, state, and sector levels. See https://portal.census.gov/pulse/data/downloads/Index-construction-for-the-Small-Business-Pulse-Survey.pdf for how to interpret the index values and how indexes were constructed. Differences between estimates may be attributed to sampling or nonsampling error, rather than to differences in underlying economic conditions. High levels of non-response contribute to large nonsampling error. Caution should be used when drawing conclusions from the estimates and any comparisons over time. While standard errors for the index estimates are not provided, the standard errors for the indexes may be large and differences in the index estimates over time may not be statistically significant.
